Now completed, The Shard, part of Sellar’s London Bridge Quarter, is Western Europe’s tallest building, soaring more than 70 floors above London.

Bistivack Bros were appointed by MACE to carry out the concrete substructure and superstructure works in a contract worth more than £50 million. The substructure adopted ‘top down’ techniques while the main structural core was slip formed in parallel solutions which delivered significant programme advantages.

The top 30 floors, culminating at a public viewing gallery between Levels 68 and 72, were constructed using a post tensioned slab construction. The sophisticated use of glazing with expressive facades of angled panes is intended to reflect light and the changing patterns of the sky, so that the form of the building will change according to the weather and seasons.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) recognised Bistivack Brothers' innovative construction methodology at The Shard, with The Building Award at The London Civil Engineering Awards 2010.

Ellmers scope of work comprised the fit out of the Viewing Gallery and WC's from Level 68 to 72, restaurants from Levels 31-33, plus public and VIP entrances at ground level. Works also included a specialist joinery package from basement to Level 72.

Now completed, the Shard houses offices, a hotel and luxury apartments, all with exclusive views over the capital.
